written as an exquisite corpse by Alex Coltrin, Daniel Amsel, Kali Scott, and Mark Macey.
Atom sits under a tree, on the run from something truly terrifying - his neighbors. It’s a ritual, it’s a musical, it’s a love story, and a fable. You have a role to play too, but will you play it? Choose a side, or stand aside. This storytelling/audience participatory experience was performed at the 2019 Great Salt Lake Fringe Festival.
Featuring Mark Macey as Atom.
Created through Zeroing, a devised theatre method conceived by Mark Macey, this short piece is a part of an ongoing research project into performance-making. Revolving around the homecoming of a young woman, WLSCWTE (YRJPS) finds a group of friends reuniting with post-modern consequences.
On Zeroing: Zeroing is a devised theatre method in which players are only permitted to create through improvisation. Talking about the work or attempting to structure it beyond what happens in the space during these improvisations is forbidden. It is the duty of the facilitator to give prompts during rehearsals to supply the players with impulses and inspiration, not to direct. Remote players contribute through prompts given online.

Christian Seiter, Front Row Reviewers Utah:
"A Farewell provides an incredibly intimate audience experience. The actors are frequently no more than three feet from the audience, and the result leaves one feeling somewhat voyeuristic, witnessing moments of intimacy and insecurity in a deeply personal living space. The intimacy of the playing space alongside Macey’s honest portrayal of insecurity, self-deprecation, and misplaced hopefulness makes this a production well worth seeing, particularly if you are new to “found space” theatre. Scott, likewise, delivers an intriguing performance, and in particular shines during the more lighthearted moments of the piece. The play is most successful when it trusts silence and genuine human moments in a truly lived-in playing space."

Surrounded by her personal belongings, a girl sits in a shower in a dark public restroom and works through her experiences of sexual assault and invasions of privacy. Unbeknownst to her, audience members armed with flashlights sift through her personal belongings and overhear her darkest secrets.
Anonymous Audience Responses:
"It blew apart my assumptions of what a performance could be, and how it could affect me."
"As a young woman, there was a lot of material I could relate to, and that felt very personal to me. The performance made me think a lot about myself and the culture I grew up in, and left me with thoughts that I will continue to digest over the next few days, if not forever. It was captivating, intimate, and heart-wrenching in addition to thought-provoking, and I loved it."
"This piece isn't a "see everything" play - it's a revelation of character through the audience's decision to pry or listen or to do both, rather than purely the script. As an audience member your actions and choices have consequences - not on the spoken dialogue or arc in the speech, but in the exposition and deeper layers you find in the items. If I just listened with my eyes closed I would have maybe learned less from the confessional in the shower than from my own digging. The inclusion of multiple elements made for a very visceral experience."
"I left feeling guilty. And sad. And shaken. And also empowered as an artist in a strange way, what you did was brave and imaginative, and beautiful, and scary, and just overall such a terrifying and poignant thing to be a part of. Thank you."
